The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship features the world’s fastest outdoor motocross racers, racing aboard the best bikes each factory offers, on the roughest, toughest tracks in the world. Motocross racing is survival of the fittest as well as the fastest every weekend; it’s where legends like Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, James Stewart, and Ryan Villopoto were built.
The newest member of the Alli family of action sports, Motocross is the original extreme action sport, and the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship is the pinnacle of pure motocross. The 12-rounds series, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, begins in California on Memorial Day weekend in May and ends in Pennsylvania on Labor Day weekend in September. It includes stops at the premier motocross racing facilities in America, with events in Colorado, Texas, Massachusetts, Washington, New York, Maryland and Michigan. The pro riders meet up on Saturday afternoon, with competition divided into two classes: one for 250cc bikes, and one for 450cc machines. Also, eight of the rounds feature the rapidly-growing Pro Women’s Motocross Championship, and the final round features Pro ATV Motocross.
Each track presents its own unique blend of jumps, hills, corners and whoops, but all the races run under the same format: two thirty-minute-plus-two lap motos (races) per class, with the scores from each race combined to determine the overall winner. The competition also tests fitness, as motocross at this speed is arguably the most physically demanding sport in the world.
The AMA Pro Motocross Championship began in 1972. Back then, American riders were still learning the ropes from their European counterparts who invented the sport. They learned soon, though, and ultra-competitive riders like Bob Hannah, Marty Smith, Jimmy Weinert, Tony DiStefano, and Kent Howerton pushed the sport to new heights.
By the early-1980s, American stars were leading the way, as the likes of Rick Johnson, Broc Glover, Mark Bar
nett, Jeff Ward, Johnny O’Mara, and David Bailey met to battle at every round, surpassing the European masters in speed and technique.
Those men paved the way for modern legends like Jeff Stanton and Damon Bradshaw, Jeremy McGrath and Jeff Emig, and of course Ricky Carmichael, who became known as “the GOAT,” which stands for “Greatest Of All-Time,” after his amazing run at the top landed him ten consecutive AMA Pro Motocross Championships.
Motocross fans are a unique breed of action sport consumer – edgy, energetic, enthusiastic, and athletic. Motocross is a lifestyle sport, and for 12 weekends each summer, the best athletes on the pla
net do battle on the toughest tracks in the land. The real winners are the thousands of fans who get a spot at the fence and cheer for their heroes through every second of the action. 2011 will mark the historic 40th season of American Motocross.

Buchanan, Michigan’s RedBud is the centerpiece of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship. Located just above the Michigan-Indiana state line, RedBud is among the most highly regarded motocross tracks in the world, and July Fourth weekend there is one of the region’s biggest events in general. Located in the beautiful rolling hills of southwestern Michigan – a state with an affinity for off-road recreational vehicle use – RedBud has bragging rights to claim the largest attendance of any U.S. motocross race, year after year. With just the right soil mix, plenty of room for passing, and the biggest jump on the circuit - the infamous LaRocco’s Leap, named after local legend Mike LaRocco - RedBud is the top motocross destination in a region that loves its motorsports. And the loyal Michigan fans’ chants of “Red Buuuuud!!!” are well-known throughout the motocross world.
One winter nearly forty years ago, Valparaiso, Indiana’s Gene Ritchie took a trip to Buchanan for a snowmobile race. He rode around the property, imagining that a great motocross track could be carved into the hills and fields. When that property came up for sale in 1972, Ritchie pursued his dream of creating a national-caliber motocross track. He and his wife, Nancy, found some willing partners and purchased the property. The Ritchies, the Pattersons, and the Millers built their dream track and began holding races in 1973.
RedBud held its first AMA Motocross National in 1974, and it was won by another local motocross star, Hadley, Michigan’s Mike Hartwig. The facility also hosted Trans-AMA races each fall, often featuring battles between the world’s best rider at the time, Roger DeCoster, and America’s best, Bob “Hurricane” Hannah.
Within a few years, the original partners moved on and the Ritchie family relocated to Michigan to become full-time motocross promoters. Gene opened a bike shop, Red Bud Cycle, selling Bultacos and Maicos near the track entrance. The shop mechanic, a local teenage
MX racer, became the centerpiece of the Friday night
MX intermission shows; that teen was the late “Wheelie King”, Doug Domokos, who went on to set world records and wow fans around the globe with his wheelie shows and spectacular stunts.
Other stars emerged from the RedBud amateur races, too, most notably the Bomber, Mark Bar
nett from nearby Bridgeview, Illinois, Michigan’s five-time Women’s National Champ Lisa (Akin) Wagner (now on staff at RedBud!), six-time AMA
MX and SX Champ Jeff Stanton and of course, “the Rock”, Mike LaRocco.
Also, since 2005, RedBud has played host to the second round of the Monster Energy Triple Crown of Motocross, a series-within-the-series where a rider can earn a $50,000 bonus if he sweeps all three rounds. Over the years, only Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart have managed to pull it off. For 2009, the Monster Energy Triple Crown of Motocross returns again to RedBud (as well as High Point and Budds Creek) and will be shown live on NBC.
RedBud is also one of four rounds on the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championships schedule which will host the FMF Two-Stroke Invitational, which will bring back the sights and sounds (and pre-mix smell) of two-stroke motocross bikes. Check it all out on July Fourth weekend, 2009, at RedBud!
